The name Standard Chartered originates from two banks from which it was formed. The two banks are The Standard Bank of British South Africa and The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. The merger between these two banks took place in 1969.

At present, the branches and sub-branches of Standard Chartered Bank are controlled from Mumbai though Kolkata remains as a major trade and financial centre. At present, Standard Chartered Bank is the biggest foreign bank in India.
