Standard Chartered Bank is the biggest foreign commercial bank in India. The global headquarters of the bank are located in London and the Indian headquarters of the bank are based in Mumbai.
Standard Chartered Bank is a global financial services provider based in the United Kingdom. The operations of Standard Chartered plc are present in more than 70 countries of the world. The greater part of the profits made by the bank is generated by the Asian, African and Middle East branches of the bank. The bank is now focusing on corporate, individual and institutional banking and treasury operations.
The name Standard Chartered originates from two banks from which it was formed. The two banks are The Standard Bank of British South Africa and The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. The merger between these two banks took place in 1969.
The Chartered Bank started its operations in Kolkata in 1858. During that period, Kolkata was the most important city and trade centre in India. In 1869, the bank shifted its operations to Mumbai as the city became the principal trade centre of India. At present, the branches and sub-branches of Standard Chartered Bank are controlled from Mumbai though Kolkata remains as a major trade and financial centre. At present, Standard Chartered Bank is the biggest foreign bank in India.
Standard Chartered acquired Grindlays Bank in 2000 to grow its operations in India and Pakistan. SCB offers a comprehensive range of banking services and products to the Indian clientele such as Private Banking, Personal Banking, Wholesale Banking and SME Banking.
